Mar 01, 2015 There's certainly something to be said that maybe the logic was that in order to do sneak attack damage the weapon had to be 'precise', which means you are using your Dex mod to hit. But RAW, you can use a Rapier with your 18 strength, 8 dex rogue and still do sneak attack damage because the weapon is a finesse weapon.
Quick question - can a Rogue make an unarmed attack and apply a valid Sneak Attack? This is NOT a monk's Unarmed Strike, just a regular fist, foot, etc. RAW, the answer would be no, as a fist is not a Finesse weapon. However, it passes my Rule of Cool, having a rogue smacking someone from behind to knock someone out. 'Head Butt Sneak Attack!' But then that could get into more troublesome territory, like if a rogue wants to knock someone out with Baseball Bat Sneak Attack. Or being more effective at breaking someone's neck from behind by Sneak Attack compared to an actual Monk. What say you?
@JeremyECrawford@gaaran00b To clarify. Can the Rogue SA twice during the same round, if on two different turns. (ie. attack action + OA)

Yes. The Sneak Attack restriction is once per turn, not once per round. https://t.co/ulhoPDaHun
May 03, 2019 Well as it goes a 5th level barbarian is only going to be adding +2 rage damage, conversely those extra 5 levels in Rogue would add +2d6 to sneak attack damage, for an average of +7 damage. The combo isn't going to break anything as it wouldn't be that difficult to gain sneak attack on most rounds (especially for a 20th lvl character).
Sneak Attack Beginning at 1st Level, you know how to strike subtly and exploit a foe's distraction. Once per turn, you can deal an extra 1d6 damage to one creature you hit with an Attack if you have advantage on the Attack roll. The Attack must use a Finesse or a ranged weapon.

Dnd 5e Sneak Attack Damage Type
@JeremyECrawford ok, the concern was that Reactions technically count as someone else’s turn since they work as a reaction to another’s turn

A reaction is a response to a trigger of some kind. That trigger might be on your turn or someone else’s. https://t.co/ghoiX1bt1u
